‘The Sun Show’ is a design of innovative window blinds for the meeting room of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science which was produced in collaboration with TextielLab, Tilburg and Agile, Nuenen
The installation shows newly developed projects and large-scale material experiments in the context of sun protection and a play between material and (sun) light. It consists of four woven, textile panels with pop-up patterns that open and close in a breathing rhythm, regulating the sunlight that shines into the space. The shapes open and close themselves by a mechanical structure, triggered by a light sensor.
In order to achieve the transparency effect of the window blinds, Alissa+Nienke worked with monofilament yarns. The cutouts are fixed by a colourful cluster of embroidery. This project is based on collaboration of craftsmanship and technology, and therefore, the design is highly refined and detailed.
Alissa+Nienke is a material research and design studio with a unique interpretation of surface design, founded by Alissa van Asseldonk and Nienke Bongers. Alissa van Asseldonk and Nienke Bongers (both 1988) worked together during their studies, became friends and now form the design agency Alissa+Nienke, specialised in materials and surfaces.
