Traditionally plain black and worn on formal occasions, the classic bow tie is transformed into woven butterfly wings in Corné Gabriëls’ fun reinterpretation.
The metamorphosis of caterpillar to butterfly is one of nature’s most profound. When Gabriëls experienced a significant change in his own life – meeting his father for the first time – butterflies became the basis for a new collection of bow ties. The collection includes silk bow ties with splashes of colour across the ‘wings’ as well as monochromatic cotton bow ties.
A photo of a butterfly was edited to such an extent that the wings come out well in the fold of the bow tie. The development process started with one weft, creating a black and white version. Later in the process Gabriëls tested two wefts for a three-colour effect.
