‘Motifs and mouvement’ is a collection of woven interior textiles. It is the result of a visual quest in which music was converted into patterns. Rhythm plays an important role in this. The rhythm determines how the planes in the image relate to each other. That creates both order and dynamism.
The collection is a search for the balance between order and dynamism. Van Laer draws inspiration from geometric, architectural patterns. In addition to visual exploration, Motifs and mouvement’ is also a technical investigation. The collection explores the effect of the bonds and materials used on the ambient noise. By playing with relief and thickness, and by using sound-absorbing materials such as linen, the acoustic properties of the fabrics improve.
Fie Van Laer explored the effect of the bindings and materials used on the ambient noise. She worked with mohair yarns, creating a volumnious double sided textile with clean graphic lines.
Fie Van Laer (1997) is a Belgian textile designer with an affinity for weaving, bright colours and graphic patterns. She studied textile design at Luca School of Arts in Ghent. Next to weaving, she also likes to draw patterns. These arise from a search for the balance between order and dynamics. Her fabrics are characterised by a bright colour palette and the use of natural materials. The bindings and underlying systems are given a leading role in her work.
