Project

‘Raamwerk’ examines the role of windows and the tension that between opening them to the outside world and closing them off with a textile filter. The design of these free-hanging textile objects, which is refined and uncluttered, is not intended to block out light but rather to play with the incidence of light, revealing or concealing patterns and shades of colour. The character of the textile changes depending on the amount of light and position of the viewer. This, in turn, alters the experience and division of a space.

Process

The designers used a single type of metal yarn in the weft, carefully researching and applying the yarn’s properties. The metal yarn was found to have a reinforcing effect on the fabric’s airy character and transparency. In addition, it added an interesting sheen to the surface that can reflect the light in the room. The number of weft threads per centimetre also determined the transparency and intensity of the colours. A gradient in the colours provided more or less privacy in the horizontal direction. In addition, various weaves were used to enhance the visual light patterns. During these experiments, finding a balance between techniques, weaves and patterns was an important starting point.

Creator

Jas & Cal

Jasmijn Wester and Calvin Kooiman are JAS&CAL. The duo is driven by a lively curiosity in the way textiles are made. By discovering techniques and working with the material they get new and valuable insights. Through their work they contribute to more awareness of textiles and materials.

In their studio they experiment freely with materials and tools. These explorations form the starting point for their translation into textile designs. The results vary between handcraft and machine-made, from unique interior pieces to spatial textiles that connect materials, process and colour. In the outcome all with the same meticulous attention to tactility, simplicity and refinement.
