Project

After extensive renovation by KAAN Architects, Het Loo Palace reopened to visitors in 2023. A new café was created in the Balzaal restaurant, which once housed King Willem III’s horses and was used for film screenings during the reign of Queen Wilhelmina. Three impressive tapestries give the space a cosy feel and improve the acoustics. KAAN commissioned the TextielLab to make the fabrics, which were hung in the palace by Oostendorp, a company that the lab has worked with closely for almost 15 years. To make the wallcovering visually interesting from all distances, the design plays with images within an image. From a distance, the three large panels appear to be filled diagonally from corner to corner with an ornate leaf. Up close, it becomes evident that the large leaf is made up of hundreds of small, raised leaves in ecru, grey, black, gold and silver, with the metal yarn providing a regal shine. All the yarns used are fire retardant, which was an important requirement for this public space. A total of 73 metres of fabric were woven for this large-scale interior project.
