‘Angels Delight’ is a series of wall hangings that Yamuna Forzani developed in the TextielLab. Forzani already had some experience on the circular knitting machine, mainly using the jacquard technique to mix numerous colours and yarns. For this series, she looked for ways to create a variety of colours and textures using the double cloth technique.

Project

Because the double cloth technique has limited possibilities in terms of colour use, Forzani had to build up her images in a different way to create the same clarity and power. Using portrait photos as a starting point, she divided the images into layers in order to knit shadows and details in the design. Despite the technical constraints – including the limited thickness of the weave and only being able to knit with four colours – Forzani managed to push the boundaries of the knitting machine. In doing so, she completely revised the double cloth technique and executed it in an unorthodox way. At the same time, her playful and manually drawn lines combined with the photographic elements of the portraits resulted in vibrant designs.

Exhibitions & Publications

‘Angels Delight’ was made for a performance in Worm in Rotterdam. Some of the fabrics were turned into clothing such as kimonos and jackets while others were used as wall hangings/art pieces during the performance.
