‘Ripening Rugs’ by product, material and spatial designer Adrianus Kundert is a positive take on the process of wear and tear. The rugs are designed in such a way that they come to life with intensive use; as the yarn or fabric wears down, a different colour or texture appears.

Project

Working closely with various companies and experts, Kundert developed new techniques and yarns for this project. Rather than decreasing the rugs’ value, the gradual erosion adds to their appeal. Through intensive use, the top layer of the yarn becomes worn, revealing the underlying colour. The new colour appears in the areas where the rug is used the most, creating a unique visual impression of its owner’s activities.
