The TextielMuseum commissioned designer Ina Meijer in 2010 to design a sustainable table damask. The dots on this table linen have been applied by hand with natural dyes. The plants that provided the dyestuff for the coloured dots are depicted as a woven structure in the damask.
At the Textielmuseum’s invitation Meijer explored sustainable raw materials and processes for the exhibition ‘reTHINK’. The exhibition presented fashion, interior textiles and textile products that are designed in accordance with sustainable principles. For her design Meijer turned to TINCTORIA, an Amsterdam-based company specialized in vegetable-dyed textiles, to assist with the sustainable dyeing processes. Meijer chose colours that are not immediately associated with natural dyestuffs and are aesthetically intriguing. The plants used to make the dyes appear as visual elements in the weave and the names of the plants that were used for the dyes – buckthorn, goldenrod, sorghum and madder – have been embroidered onto the cloth.
Ina Meijer is designer at Studio INAMATT, which she founded together with Matthijs van Cruijsen in 2001. The studio specialises in spatial design and architecture, combining a highly artistic and investigative approach with precise technical skills. Activities range from the restructuring of residential and retail spaces to defining the perfect colour and texture palette for monumental landmarks or the shaping of playful visual identities.
