Janpeter Muilwijk worked several times at the weaving department of the TextielLab to create tapestries. In 2019 he was an artist in residence in Celleno near Rome, Italy. He wanted to translate the drawings he made there into woven works of art.
Muilwijk started his project with an artist in residency in Celleno near Rome, Italy. The drawings he created served as a starting point for his woven tapestries (a free work), that he developed in the TextielLab.
In the TextielLab, Muilwijk incorporated 10 different colourful yarns in a dense satin binding. He used different qualities of yarns like merino wool, biological cotton and mercerised cotton for a subtle difference in texture and shine. In the series he focused on the colour play and smooth gradients. He later finished the works using hand-embroidery.
Muilwijk (Fontainebleau, 1960) makes drawings, paintings and tapestries that are inspired by paradise. He studied at the Christian Academy for Visual Arts in Kampen and HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. His work has won several awards, including the Royal Prize for Fine Art in 1992. He lives and works in Middelburg.
