AKI, a limited edition paravent that is an autonomous object, frames textile art in a functional way. The divider is the result of an extensive research and collaboration with interior architect Charlotte Vlerick of Hija Studio. The divider was designed with respect for traditional craftsmanship and the choice of pure materials in mind. The fabric for the AKI paravent is available in 2 variants. An abstract ton-sur-ton version called Ton and Akua, a derivative of an original watercolour painted by NVdM.
The frame of the room divider is made of curved wood that holds the fabric in place. The fabric is made up of four layers. The fine weave and separate layers create a remarkable play of light. The use of different yarns also influences the translucency of the screen.
Van der Massen (1988) is an Antwerp-based freelance textile and graphic designer. After finishing her master’s degree in graphic design at Sint Lucas Antwerp, she went on to study textile design at LUCA Gent, where she was selected for a residency at the TextielMuseum. Her work is characterised by an interest in and sensitivity for (natural) materials, the surface of textiles and technicality. She explores (industrial) production methods and textile’s potential as an autonomous, spatial and acoustic element in interior or living environments.
