For the exhibition ‘Tijdelijk Modemuseum’ in Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, Martijn van Strien & Vera de Pont developed a tapestry for the outside of the building that incorporates three messages from the manifesto that they wrote to accompany the exhibition. The tapestry invited passers-by to discover the exhibition and manifesto inside Het Nieuwe Instituut.

Project

Designers and innovators Van Strien and De Pont teamed up to write a manifesto that expresses their shared vision for an open source fashion industry. It offers a new perspective on how we perceive and wear clothing, and contains ideas for renewed excitement for a more sustainable, fair and technology-driven global fashion system. To illustrate the manifesto’s vision, Van Strien and De Pont created a unique tapestry for the outside of Het Nieuwe Instituut building. The three messages incorporated in the tapestries are ‘Make it last’, ‘Download me here’ and ‘You made it, now change it’. All three are chapter titles from the manifesto.

Process

The time of day and type of light that hits the tapestry determine which message is visible. To create the effect, each phrase is woven from a high-tech yarn, either coloured, glow in the dark or reflective. The yarns selected for the rest of the tapestry mean it is fully weather- and temperature-proof.

Creator

Martijn van Strien & Vera de Pont
  • Martijn van Strien (1988) graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2012, with majors in textile design and forecasting. In 2014, he started his own studio, specialized in textile innovation and testing radically different approaches to garment and product design, production and consumption. Since 2015, he has headed The Post-Couture Collective, which has created a line of wearable clothing designed specifically for production on laser cutters and 3D printers, allowing consumers to make their own clothes.
  • Vera de Pont studied in the Man and Identity department at the Design Academy Eindhoven before obtaining a master’s degree from the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam in 2017. Her interests lie at the intersection of design and science. This was the reason that she took a foundation course in biomedical sciences in Maastricht in 2011. She is running the design studio AnoukxVera, where she collaborates with Anouk van de Sande on various design projects: from colour and print design to iconic sportswear. In addition, Vera has her own design studio, Studio Vera de Pont, and has been a freelance designer at Hella Jongerius’ Jongeriuslab since 2018. Since 2021 she is also working as a yarn advisor at TextielLab.
