Textile designer Mira Järvinen designed KAKSIN for the Habitare Design Competition. The theme of the competition was ‘tête-à-tête’, an intimate meeting between two people. The project was selected as one of the competition’s four finalists and presented at the Habitare Design Fair in Helsinki in 2019.
KAKSIN (Finnish for 'one on one') takes the wearer on a journey through childhood memories. Using an everyday object, Järvinen wanted to create the opportunity to play and experiment, by feeling and wearing the object together. The project was inspired by the traditional woollen blanket, which is transformed into a fortress and safe haven during children's games – a secret place where stories are shared with a best friend, one on one.
KAKSIN is knitted from merino wool and mohair. Thanks to the knitted structures, the materials’ classic properties of comfort and cosiness are brought to the fore. The shape, size and weight of the design support this tactile experience. Meanwhile, the pattern and colour scheme add playfulness to the simplified form. Up close, it becomes clear that the stripes in the apparently traditional pattern follow their own paths and at the same time are entwined with each other. The work straddles the middle ground between a garment, work of art and interior design.
