Graphic artist Sigrid Calon is fascinated by grids, particularly embroidery grids. The lines and forms of embroidery stitches are digitally repeated and overlapped to create graphic patterns. Calon made 120 prints using the stencil technique and eight colours, translating a number of these into tapestries in 2014.
In 2012, Calon researched the possibilities of combining the stencil technique with embroidery grids. On an embroidery grid of at least 3x3 dots, eight different stitches are possible. When this is converted digitally, the stitches create lines. She repeated these lines, combined and overlapped them and used them until a pattern arose. Using a total of eight colours, she printed out the patterns on the RISO machine in the Charles Nypels Lab at the Jan van Eyck Academy. With these eight colours she made two-tone, three-tone and four-tone colour combinations. Her book, To the extend of / \ | & -, shows the results of her research in 120 prints. Each colour combination is only shown once.
Calon (Den Bosch, 1969) has a boundless curiosity and urge to explore, discover and create. She looks for wonder and inspiration in everyday things. Intuition, rationality and playfulness are important factors in her work. Her book To the extend of / \ | & - was presented at art book fairs in London, Los Angeles and New York and was selected as one of the Best Dutch Book Designs in 2012. Calon lives and works in Tilburg.
