Project

For Reus, the tactile quality of fabric as a more subtle and humane material presents an antidote to the cooler, more architectural components of her work. Using weaving as a method of construction, she was able to achieve a high level of detail and graphic intricacy in the finished product.

Process

In the TextielLab, Reus experimented extensively with yarns and bindings to produce a fire hose from specially twined, shiny yarns in various colours.

Creator

Magali Reus

Reus studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam before moving to Goldsmiths College in London in 2002. In 2013 and 2014, she studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. She makes sculptures in which she tries to indicate a connection between the aesthetic and the imperfect. She has had solo exhibitions at The Approach in London, The Hepworth in Wakefield, the SculptureCenter in New York and the Westfälischer Kunstverein in Münster, Germany. In 2015, she won the Prix de Rome for five works from her series Leaves.
