Finnish design duo Kivistö-Leppisaari works at the interface between material and spatial design and specialises in the development of soft materials and installations. ‘Seamless Dress’ is part of the Knit Divisions project, presented during Milan Design Week in 2018.
Inspired by the play of light through stained-glass windows, Knit Divisions explores the creation of space with layers of colour and soft structures. The project has two components: a three-part installation of knitted screens and a three-part collection of knitted garments. The installation combines knitted fabrics and wooden frames. Independently, they act as room dividers, but together they form an artistic installation and investigation into different knitting techniques and structures.
To illustrate the versatility of the knits, each screen is complemented by a garment made using the same materials and techniques. ‘Seamless Dress’ therefore combines gold and silver Lurex, lightweight white cotton with black details and the screen’s open pointelle structure. The cotton is replaced with a blend of wool and viscose for a softer touch. Although the seamless knitting technique is often associated with functional knits and sportswear, this dress is given a more refined interpretation with a neckline and cuffs that almost resemble jewels.
