In collaboration with architectural firm Artesk van Royen, Maastricht, Ingeborg Meulendijks produced a series of large wall panels for an architectonic project and private residence near Utrecht. The panels are divided over two walls in the house. At the points where the walls – and panels – meet, ‘a softer edge’ is created.
Meulendijks took abstract drawings of trees – as a sign of life – as a starting point. The drawings were digitalised to create a subtle tension in the weave between manual repetition (the lines of a hand-drawn pattern) and machine repetition (warp and weft by the computer-controlled loom). The size of the lines was a particular challenge because of the scale of the project. The fabric also had to have a small structure, which was achieved by accentuating the background.
Meulendijks (The Netherlands, 1968) is a Maastricht-based artist and lecturer. She studied fine arts and design at the Maastricht Academy and fine arts, design and theory at the Jan van Eyck Academy. She founded Studio Ingeborg Meulendijks in 1992.
