When knitting a shape, the number of colours in the design is normally limited. However, this technique makes it possible to knit horizontal and vertical stripes and so create certain patterns. As the vertical stripes are only knitted on half of the rows and the horizontal stripes on all the rows, the vertical stripes appear to pop out and the others to contract.
