Materials cotton

For the exhibition 'Soft?-Tactile Dialogues', organised by MoMu Antwerp and held in Antwerp’s Maurice Verbaet Center, creative duo WIESI WILL developed a large-scale knitted sculpture. The designers’ extensive research into different jacquard techniques, carried out in collaboration with the TextielLab, resulted in colourful, transparent panels.

Project

Laure van Brempt and Vera Roggli, the Antwerp-based creatives behind textile design studio WIESI WILL, took the 46-metre-high staircase in the old AWW tower in Antwerp as the starting point for their work. The transparent viscose panels they developed emphasised the almost dizzying feeling visitors get when looking down from the tower’s seventh floor. On the one hand, Van Brempt and Roggli wanted the large, colourful panels to make the 'lost' space in the middle of the stairwell visible, while using the material’s transparency to retain the stairwell’s height and airiness. On the other hand, they guided visitors through the work from top to bottom, with the work serving as ‘a moment of travel’.
