To celebrate the second anniversary of the Bijenkorf department store’s 'Room on the Roof' artist in residence initiative, Bethan Laura Wood created a hypnotic installation of fruity desserts titled 'After party – Sweet dreams'.
The sweet treats, which look good enough to eat, were inspired by still life scenes and portraits in the Rijksmuseum and formed and folded out of humble cotton tablecloths and napkins. Each item was embroidered and then decorated with pins and beads, echoing the cheese and pineapple classic. The layers of cream resemble the millstone ruffs so prominent in late 16th-century portraits. The second part of the installation featured woven tea towels suspended behind a glittering disco ball, turning even the chore of an after-party clean-up into a festive event.
