In this sample, textile designer Eugene van Veldhoven experimented with embroidery on synthetic tulle. He used relief embroidery in different ways to create a textured design.
To develop the embroidered relief, Van Veldhoven covered the tulle with a layer of foam, on which he then embroidered the design. Because the embroidery stitches are so close together, the embroidery needle perforated the foam repeatedly. This made it easy to remove the excess foam after embroidering. To better align with the project’s ultimate goal, the technique was also applied to a dense fabric. Van Veldhoven's work is characterised by his use of several techniques. Working on the TextielLab’s embroidery machine with product developer Frank de Wind, Van Veldhoven was able to experiment with various embroidery applications and techniques.
