This sample was made by superimposing two layers of fabric, then embroidering and laser cutting them. In making the sample, textile designer Eugene van Veldhoven worked with product developer Frank de Wind to find ways to combine both techniques in a single work.
The fabric on the bottom layer is a woven polyester and viscose mix. This is covered in small transparent dots made using a chemical process. The fabric on the top layer is 100% polyester. The embroidered white circles connect both fabrics, which were then positioned very precisely on the laser cutting machine. Only the top layer of fabric was cut to produce the larger black circles. Because the original black fabric tended to curl at the edges after being cut, a thinner, stiffer fabric was ultimately used.
