Eugene van Veldhoven

2019 research sample

For this sample, textile designer Eugene van Veldhoven put three layers of water-soluble foil between two layers of fabric before embroidering the fabric together. Certain elements were laser cut out of the top layer of fabric, but the bottom layer remained intact thanks to the water-soluble film.

Project

To ensure that the bottom layer of fabric was left intact, the laser machine was set up in such a way that the laser's strength weakened as it penetrated further through the fabric. This was achieved by inserting the water-soluble foil between the layers of fabric. This weakened the laser’s strength to such an extent that the beam did not reach the bottom layer of fabric. Van Veldhoven's work is characterised by the use of multiple techniques. By experimenting with product developer Frank de Wind in the TextielLab, he was able to delve into the different applications of the embroidery machine and embroidery techniques.
