RembrandtLAB - Constructing Colours

-

Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters

2016 throw
Materials cotton linen wool

Commissioned by RembrandtLAB, Maarten Kolk and Guus Kusters conducted research in 2015 and 2016 into the use of colour and recipes by artist Rembrandt van Rijn. Based on his paintings, Kolk and Kusters investigated how colour usage and pigment, raw materials, recipes and colour perception from the 17th century could be reproduced. At the same time, they explored modern interpretations in other mediums, materials and techniques, including textiles. The design duo presented the results of the colour study during Dutch Design Week 2016. The results feature woven plaids, each based on fragments from a well-known painting by the artist.

Commissioned by RembrandtLAB, an initiative of Museum De Lakenhal, Museum Het Rembrandthuis en Leiden Marketing and Cultuurfonds.
