This sample is the result of an intarsia test. In intarsia knitting, a pattern is created by incorporating a yarn only where the colour is needed on the front of the fabric. This differs from jacquard, where a yarn that is not needed in the pattern ‘floats’ across the back of the fabric until it is needed again. On a knitting machine, separate yarn carriers are required for each colour change. This test consisted of two parts. First, the yarn carriers were threaded with different colours. Next, the stitch joining the colours together was omitted, so the colours were knitted as individual strips.
